Challenge

In March 2009, Brand Electioneering was briefed to help RNIB develop a new signature national fundraising event for the charity.

Other charities have fun runs or telethons to raise money, which didn’t seem right for a charity supporting blind and partially sighted people. We wanted something that was appropriate and motivating for both the fundraising audiences and could also allow RNIB service users to take part.

Solution

After nine months of development, research and consultation the idea of books to help the blind was chosen as something the RNIB could raise money with. The research used the RNIB audience typographies as a base and then we used a technique called ‘passion mapping’ to overlay areas of interest i.e. sport, gardening, gardening, food and wine etc. to ensure that any proposed fundraising mechanic would appeal to our audience. We then overlaid this analysis with a ‘gap’ analysis which input areas currently ‘owned’ by other charities for the purposes of fundraising i.e. 2k running for Cancer Research ‘Race for Life’ and Coffee mornings for Macmillan Cancer Support. As a result of this analysis, books and reading was identified as a fundraising area that was not only inclusive and motivating to all audiences and service users but crucially represented an area RNIB could make its own.  

The book event and bring and buy sales were chosen as lead mechanics for the launch routes and tested out on a successful real time test amongst RNIBs Community Fundraising team in autumn 2009. The test collateral included promotional literature packs

Book marks, moneyboxes and posters. Brand Electioneering even pitched in with the test by running our very own book bring and buy sale at our offices, which raised £125 for this excellent cause. These fundraising mechanics are scalable, fun to do and will generate a large amount of funds for RNIB in the coming years.

Brand Electioneering produced 5 different creative concepts and the one below was chosen. The imagery and copy reach out in a friendly, happy and easy way to prospective organisers and participants.

A five-year plan and business case was produced in conjunction with the RNIB team and May 2010 saw the official launch of the event. We are proud to have been involved with this project and the enormous benefit it will bring to blind and partially sighted people everywhere.
